----------------- Gravity's Rainbow ----------------- by Thomas Crone The Riverfront Times, November 1-7, 1995, p. 35 Kurt Kerns gets a little bit dreamy when discussing his next gig. "I can't wait. I can't wait to start playing again. I'm most nervous just before going out onstage. The lights dim. The music stops. Six hundred eyes on you. But once you start playing, it's a beautiful calm. You slip into a zone, and like a flash, it's gone." After playing every weekend for six years, it's been a good three years since Kerns actually played a date. The drummer of Gravity Kills can start making up for lost time next week, when his band debuts at the Other World on Nov. 4, headlining a cavalcade show that'll also feature locals Bellyfeel and Headtrip Window and fellow TVT act Fledgling. With their record finished, the band - Kerns, vocalist Jeff Scheel, guitarist Matt Dudenhoeffer and keyboardist/programmer Doug Firley - have turned their sights on other activities. For instance, there's been remixing done on the single "Guilty," including club and death-metal mixes ("It's totally unpredictable and fun to get them back"). They've been screening clips of video directors, with a scheduled shooting in a few weeks. And there's always the band-killer, cover artwork, to be completed. In the meantime, the band's not been totally inactive. After all, they've scored songs on two No. 1 movie soundtracks, /Seven/ and /Mortal Kombat/, which shipped a cool million copies. "People ask us how that happened, and we have to tell them luck," Kerns says. "Luck seems to follow us around." They've also been rehearsing. "We've been going over the set four times a day," he says. "It's weird. One day my wrist'll hurt. The next day my biceps. Now, it's my upper back. There's all these strange little muscles that haven't been used in three years. "We'll play for 45 minutes, basically everything that's on the album. Technically, there's no margin for error. It's a lot different for us than just doing covers songs at frat parties. It's a whole new deal. We want no slop, no mistakes. Obviously, people from our label will be there, our manager, maybe our lawyer and an accountant. All kinds of touring agents, publishers, since we're still trying to get a publishing deal. There'll be all kinds of industry people to check, which will also be good for Bellyfeel and Headtrip Window." After this show, the band looks to be heading on a short tour in late November with kindred musical souls Sister Machine Gun and Die Krupps. "We've got to get our chops back for that." It all starts at the Other World next week, with arguably the most curious debut of the most freakishly signed band in recent St. Louis history. Pressure? "It's immeasurable." And, it sounds, strangely fun. [All copyrights are property of the owner. This article is reposted on this site because the original owner does not have it on the web.
