---------------------------------------------------------- Studio Report: Gravity Kills record at Martin Atkins' gaff ---------------------------------------------------------- author not given Metal Hammer, Jan 2002 transcribed by James Hadley Gravity Kills know all about paying their dues. Since the early success of their '96 self-titled debut and the single 'Guilty', the St. Louis-based industrial/electronic quartet have endured a less enthusiastic reception for their second album 'Perversion' and three years of poverty as they tried to sort a new label deal and management. At times, they were on the brink of splitting up and in fact, drummer Kurt Kerns did leave, finding the pressure too much. All those experiences are reflected in their new album, appropriately titled 'Superstarved'. Although the four tracks that were previewed to Metal Hammer - 'Take It All Away', 'Breakdown', 'One Thing' and 'Forget Your Name' - sound more 'live' and guitar-oriented than their previous output, the band claim that none of the writing was pre-meditated. "From start to finish, we don't really even think stylistically, we just do what we do, and that's what you get," says frontman Jeff Scheel. "When we were working on the record, we found out as we went along that we were writing about what we were going through: relationships that were disastrous, the potential ending of the career and our want for more time in the spotlight." 'Superstarved' was recorded at Pigface/Killing Joke producer Martin Atkins' studio in Chicago, a process which involved the band living at his family home for three months, in a house so crowded that at one point, new drummer Brad Booker (Stir) was sleeping on the floor with the dog! "I wouldn't say that we had overstayed our welcome by the time the album was finished," grins keyboard player Doug Dudenhoeffer [sic], "but it was definitley time to go!" However, Atkins obviously bears no grudge, as he's taken them out as his opening act on his North American tour and Gravity Kills are hoping to visit Europe again once 'Superstarved is' released on March 18. Now that the album is finished, Doug says, "It's interesting to look back at it and go, 'This is where we've been.' All these songs describe this three year process and it's a celebration at the end." [Yes, the article actually says "Doug Dudenhoeffer", combining the first name of Doug Firley the keyboardist and the last name of Matt Dudenhoeffer the guitarist.] [All copyrights are property of the owner.
